Orphanage information
The Zhenghe Social Welfare Institute is located in the northern part of Fujian Province in the mountains. It is a ten- to fifteen-hour drive northeast from Fuzhou on sandy roads.This is a rural area of high mountains and is one of the more impoverished areas of Fujian Province. There are only a few small businesses in the area, and most people make their living by cultivating grains, potatoes, and fruit trees on the hillsides. Zhenghe is also the center of white tea production in China. The Zhenghe area covers about 675 square miles (1749 square kilometers) with a population of about 220,00 people.
Because of the poverty of the area, the financial resources of this orphanage are limited. In early 2000, there were 46 children and babies at Zhenghe and a staff of 14. That year, the annual budget for the entire orphanage was 150,000 yuan, or about $18,500.
