These photos show the teacher and pupils in the classroom for special needs children at the Nanping orphanage, sponsored by FujianKids.

Ms. Huang is the teacher for the special needs children. She recently retired from a position as a college professor and has experience teaching in village schools and as a librarian.
The classroom for special needs children at Nanping. These children are unable to attend public school because of physical or mental disabilities. For the first time in their lives, they are learning to read and write.

NX, at five, is the youngest child in the classroom. Here he is learning to write.
Writing is difficult for the two students with cerebral palsy (on left). We have purchased a computer for their use which will enable them to do some writing.
YGY, age 15, has persistent bowel problems that have prevented her from attending school. She is eager to take advantage of this opportunity to learn for the first time and is very diligent in her schoolwork.
JM is in her twenties and retarded. She is very shy and previously was unable to answer questions; instead of answering a question directed at her she would simply repeat the question. Since starting lessons she has learned to answer questions with "yes" or "no" and has become less shy, sometimes venturing out to the orphanage gate to greet the teacher when she arrives.
