Orphanage children are denied the privileges most of us take for granted. They have no family and, in many cases, no future. Orphanage life stunts a child's development. Without the encouragement and support of parents, most orphanage children do poorly in school and are ill-equipped to eventually take on the responsibilities of adulthood.

Because of limited resources, orphanages have a difficult time providing disabled children with the attention and education they need. These children have little chance to reach their potential, and their emotional needs go unmet.

Sponsorships through FujianKids keep children out of orphanages and provide them with the emotional and material support they need to thrive. To sponsor a foster child is to give that child hope, a home, and a future.

FujianKids has three sponsorship programs--Education, Foster Care, and Family Mentor sponsorships.

Education Sponsorships

In rural areas, orphaned children have a particularly difficult time getting an education. By sponsoring a child in this program, you can make sure that he or she gets an education and has a chance to escape a life of poverty. Education sponsorships are $28 a month (less than a dollar a day) and will change a child's life (see more information about the education sponsorship program).

Foster Care Program

The Fuzhou orphanage is one of the larger ones in Fujian Province. Children are most likely to experience the negative effects of institutionalization in a large orphanage, so the foster care program here is especially important. A child can be sponsored in a foster family for $600 per year ($50 per month, or $1.64 a day).

Small contributions to our foster care program are also welcome and meet an important need by covering short-term sponsorship expenses when a donor must temporarily or permanently terminate sponsorship or to cover extra medical expenses sometimes incurred by foster children, many of whom have special needs of some sort. Family Mentor Program

Children in orphanages tend to be isolated from their communities, do not participate in such routine activities as shopping or taking walks in a neighborhood, and rarely have an opportunity to see what family life is like. They also have difficulty learning about the value of work, education, goal-setting, and persistence. While care in a foster family is the best way to help orphanage children, we have not found enough sponsors to place all the orphanage children in foster homes.

The Family Mentor Program was developed to help children not in foster care develop a sense of family relationships and responsibilities. In this program, a qualified family in the local community is assigned a specific orphanage child and agrees to take this child into their family for at least two weekends a month. This program has been extremely successful. The children look forward to their weekend visits to their families, and previously withdrawn children (some who had been diagnosed as possibily autistic) have gradually revealed their sparkling personalities. Children in the Family Mentor Program also improve their performance in school.
