There are more than 40 welfare institutions in Fujian Province that care for orphaned children. Many of these are small rural institutions, and many are not involved in international adoption programs.
Even when the institutions are run by conscientious and caring staff, government funding falls far short of what is needed to care for these children. As a result, the orphanages are understaffed, and workers often can only keep up with the children's basic necessities--feeding, bathing, and changing diapers--with little time for the kind of nurturing that all children need. In addition, limited funds mean that the orphanages have difficulty providing the medical care and education these children need.
It is the goal of FujianKids to help orphanages give these children a better start in life, better opportunities as they grow, and, for those children who will never be adopted, adequate preparation to lead satisfying lives as adults.
